Driveway drainage

Water has to have somewhere to go

Almost every driveway problem we get called out to look at is a water problem wearing a different hat. Sunken areas, joints washed out, a dark green stripe of algae across the low end, efflorescence blooming on the surface, a garage that floods twice a winter. All of those start with water that had nowhere to run.

Drainage is not a product you bolt onto a finished driveway. It is a shape you build into it. We set the falls in the dirt, check them again in the compacted base, and check them a third time in the bedding layer, because once the pavers are down the grade is what it is. About a quarter inch of fall per foot moves water off a surface without being something you can feel underfoot.

Every driveway we build gets this treatment as part of the job, not as an extra line on the estimate. If you want the rest of the detail, here is how we build a paver driveway from the subgrade up.

Why does water pool on a driveway in the first place?

Usually because the driveway is flatter than it looks, or it is falling the wrong way. A lot of Peninsula homes sit with the garage slab lower than the street, so the natural run of the land carries every drop of rain down the drive and straight at the door. Add a surface that settled a half inch in one spot and you have a puddle that never leaves between December and March.

We start by shooting the grades and finding out where the high and low points really are, not where they appear to be. Then we decide how much of the problem the shape can solve on its own. Cross fall to one side, a crown down the middle, a gentle swale along the edge: these cost nothing to build in while the base is open, and they do most of the work before a single drain is ordered.

That grading stage sits under all of the paving we build across the Peninsula, because a surface that sheds water properly is the cheapest drainage there is.

Trench drain, channel drain or catch basin?

A trench or channel drain is a long narrow grate set across the driveway, usually right at the apron where the drive meets the garage or the street. It catches water across the full width in one line, so nothing gets past it. That is the right tool when water is sheeting toward a door and you need to stop all of it at once. The ICPI paving specification treats surface drainage as part of the structure rather than an accessory, and so do we.

A catch basin is a single box with a grate on top, dropped into a low point. It is the right tool when water collects in one area rather than running as a sheet, and the box gives sediment somewhere to settle so it never reaches the pipe. Most driveways we do use both, and we cut the paving around each one so the grate sits dead flush. On a hillside lot the drains work alongside the wall holding the bank back, and both have to reach the same outlet.

Where does the water actually end up?

This is the question that separates real drainage from a grate that makes people feel better. Everything we collect goes into solid pipe, sized for the area it serves, laid with a steady fall the whole way and run to a place where the water can legitimately leave: a curb outlet at the street, a daylight point on a bank, or an existing storm connection. On a lot where the soil will take it, the water never has to leave at all, which is what an open jointed paver surface is for.

Perforated pipe belongs in a gravel trench collecting groundwater, not in a run that is carrying surface water somewhere. Mixing the two is how a driveway drain ends up quietly watering a foundation. We add cleanouts so the run can be cleared years from now, and we make sure the outlet is not aimed at a neighbor.

The drains are cut in as the paving goes down rather than afterward, on the same day the field is laid and cut. Keeping the grates clear and the joints full after that is a clean and seal job every few years.

Why choose Exterior Designs for driveway drainage?

Because we are the ones laying the paving, the drainage and the surface get designed together instead of one being cut into the other afterward. A drain retrofitted into a finished driveway means saw cuts, mismatched units and a line you can see forever. Planned from the start, the grate lands on a joint line and the fall is already there to feed it.

We are an ICPI Certified Paver Installer, family owned and operated, and we only work in interlocking pavers and natural stone. Every installation carries a 20 year warranty and every estimate is free. If your drive puddles, if the garage takes water, or if the joints keep washing out in the same spot, have Todd come out and look at it while the weather is still dry.

Straight answers about paver installation on the Peninsula

My garage floods every winter. Can that be fixed without redoing the driveway?

Sometimes. If the drive has fall and one low area is the whole problem, a channel drain across the apron tied to a real outlet can solve it. If the driveway runs downhill into the door, the grade itself has to change.

How much fall does a driveway need?

Around a quarter inch per foot is the working number. That is enough to move water reliably and gentle enough that you never notice it underfoot. Any less and small settlement turns into a puddle that sits there all winter.

Do the grates get clogged with leaves?

They collect leaves, which is exactly what they are for. Trench drains and catch basins both lift open so you can clear them, and a basin has a sump that traps grit before it reaches the pipe. Sweep them in autumn.

Can you drain water from the roof downspouts too?

Yes, and it is usually worth doing at the same time. Roof water is a large volume landing in a few spots, so we tie the downspouts into their own solid pipe rather than letting them dump onto the paving.

Will a drain work on a steep hillside driveway?

Yes, and on a steep drive it matters more. Water picks up speed downhill, so we break the run with a line of channel partway down, and size the pipe below for everything arriving from uphill as well.

Do you handle drainage outside San Carlos?

Yes. We cover the Peninsula and the wider Bay Area, including Belmont, Redwood City, San Mateo, Burlingame, Hillsborough, Menlo Park and Atherton. The hillside lots in those towns are where most of this work happens, and estimates are always free.
